Your Bio

This is my storage area for the photos I take. I dont get out with the camera as much as I would like as such I only update now and again. I have been taking photos for about 6 years and a member of smugmug for 5. I'm still not sure where my "comfort zone" lies however, I have enjoyed exploring night time shooting and playing with photoshop to produce vintage looking photos.

I hope you enjoy looking through my photos as much as I have enjoyed taking them. While they may not be perfect they do give a good insight into that I get up to in my spare time.

17.3.09 Pakenham Windmill

For the last 2 nights I have been visiting Pakenham windmill to practice my night time shots, it's all a big learning curve at the moment and I have probably started on a difficult one but hey, we don't want it to be too easy ;-) Everything is in manual, including focusing which is totally new to me and it's bloody hard to do when you can't se the subject through the view finder so it's ben a real test. This is the best of about 25 shots over the 2 nights. A long way to go but it's been fun playing with different settings. Experimenting with a higher ISO was interesting however the pictures were far too grainy, this one is ISO 400 with a 30s exposure.

I also found being out at night with no one around to be really nice, just stood under the stars, listening to owls and other creatures, pretty awesome! It's been a long time since I could do that. It's a pitty the clocks go forward in 2 weeks, I could do alot more of this night time photography!

21.3.09 Nowton Park Daffs

Nowton Park is a large country estate just outside Bury St Edmunds and boasts the UK's highest Lime Avenue (most averaging 115-120ft) Each year we are blessed with this spectacular display along the whole 500+m length

27.9.09 "Man on the Edge"

Finally I have got round to sorting my Snowdonia pics, altho it meant being up till 1.30am last night!

This is from my trip with John and as you can see it wasn't just me doing stupid things close to very steep drops! This is on the summit of Tryfan, day 2 of our trip.

6.3.09 Bygone Era

Yesterday while driving around looking at trees I pased through a very rustic village, Bardwell, which is about 2 miles from my home. The main street is very narrow , especialy with cars parked on the side, so my attention while driving through was on the road and not letting my rather wide car hit any mirrors. I passed this bike stood against the old cottage and only saw it out of the corner of my eye at the very last minute. I knew instantly that I had to shoot it and slammed my brakes on (thankfuly no cars behind, just a puzzled looking postman!) backed the car up and jumped out. In those brief few seconds after seeing the bike I had a vision of how that bike could of been there 50 or even 100 years ago.

I snapped about 10 shots, hoping to capture what I visioned in those early few seconds however the pohos did not come out too well. I played with them in photoshop for ages, trying to bring out the blues and yellows in the flowers on the windowsill before accidently converting to black and white. And then it hit me, this is how I saw the image in my head, so I played with a few frames and this is the result.

This is the first time I have seen something and it's given me a vision of another time, i'm chuffed to bits that I have managed to recreate what I saw in my head.

My first picture for a while, which was incredibly fun to take. I love night time photography, it's such a massive challenge and learning curve. With this one I think my lesson is to remember to take off the UV filter to avoid annoying reflected spots of light appearing in the picure. At least I think this is the issue. Any advice welcome.

Update: After getting home and realising my mistake with the uv filter I took a trip back out this evening and tried again. The best ones here:

8.3.09 Pakenham Windmill

This windmill is from a village just down the road, it's one of 3 windmils within a 4 mile radius of here. I was quite lucky with the weather yesterday as it had been cloudy all morning and my D40 sucks in cloudy weather so I was not at all hopeful of shooting anything. I had to take Sarah to work and it was SOOO busy in town, theres a new shoping centre thats just opened and everyone from within 50 miles must of decended on the town as it was gridlocked. It took 1 1/2 hours to do a 25min run however on the plus side while driving home the sun popped out for 30 minutes and Josh was fast asleep in the car seat so I was able to play!!

Pakenham is the only village in England that has a working windmill and watermill. It seems hard to believe when you think only 100 years ago you would struggle NOT to find both.

14.6.08 - Rose

I have just been cutting my lawn when I noticed this yellow rose hanging over the fence from my neighbours garden. I have not played with flowers much so coud not resist having a shot or two.

It's my sons 1st birthday party today (birthday was Thursday) and forcast rain so a house full of screaming kids.... think I will escape somewhere quiet!

13.10.08 - Shadows

I was out in a local country park on Saturday, the weather was great and it was very quiet, it almost felt like I had the park to myself.... although I was about a mile away from the car park which makes a big difference as people dont like to walk too far ;-) at this end of the park there are a small collection of tree stumps that have been placed into a circle and named "woodhenge" These shots were taken from the top of one of these stumps.

I decided upon merging the shots like this as individually they didnt do anything. Togeather though they make a funky looking claw.....

Any yes John, a group of people did see me doing this, thankfully they were in the distance and I made a quick retreat into the trees before they were too close!!

28.6.08 - A young goose (gosling?)

I took my little one for a walk around a local park (Hartsholme, where John is often spotted lurking!) the birds and squirrels are very friendly and come up close, so close this was with my 18-55mm lens! Josh loved it, especially when the geese were plucking at his hands for food.

While out and about today I came across this interesting chap. Looks lik he is having fun in all the mud!

13.10.08

Ok I know this is the second shot of today but I am unfortunate enough not to have internet access at home so can only post from work. After a good weekend of photography I wanted to show you what I was upto so I have posted one from each day.

This was taken yesterday, we took a trip to the coast, stoped by Great Yarmouth then drove down to a pretty little village called Southwold (JB - I think you like the produce from this place ;-) ) The village was alot busier than I had planned so decided only to stay just long enough for me to get some shots. These little sheds (cant spell the correct pronounciation - JB help!) streched for a few hundered yards so I stopped at the far end and took a little shot. Had the car park been empty I would of made an effort to get a few shots and merge them togeather. A project for another day!

6.10.08 A new start

After a couple of months without posting I have finally managed a way of uploading to Smugmug woohoooo.

This photo is from one of our parks in the town centre. The ruins are from the old Abbey with the modern Cathedral in the background. I have recently aquired Photoshop elements and thought I would try playing with borders (inspired by John)

14.3.09 Thatched Church - Ixworth Thorpe

I found this church last night on the way home after my "bad" day, I was so stunned I almost crashed the car.....a Thatched Church! Before last night I had never heard of one let alone seen one before so it suprised me somewhat to find that in England there are around 100 churches roofed with thatch. Increadable! A bit of research on google has indicated that most are located in Suffolk and Norfolk and it looks like I could have 4-5 within a 10 mile radious of here, sweet!

Today has been a mixed day, on the plus side I have managed some nice shots, this church, an old forge near by (I met the owner who has said I can visit him one afternoon to shoot inside and see it working!) and then the windmill in my village....on the downside, my football (Soccer) team lost 4-1 GUTTED!!

28.3.08 - Newport Arch

It's a horrible wet day here so I decided to explore Ps a bit more. I have always loved the B&W shots with selected colour showing through. This is my first one and I found it so easy to do that I will be doing a few more!

This picture is of Newport Arch, an old Roman Gate dating to around c50AD which is still used by traffic today!!

11.3.09 Abbeygate & Cathedral

This view is from the entrance to my office, beats more office blocks!

I was torn between this and another tree photo today, given yesterdays was a tree shot I decided on this one. I couldn't find a frame to suit so have left it frameless.

The scaffold has come off the roof of the Cathedral and work is almost complete inside, I poked my head in earlier to try and get a shot but was quickly ushered out! It won't be long before it's open though.

7.1.09 - Winter Morning

Happy New Year everyone, just popping by to say hello. As yet I am still internet-less at home and have started surveying so spend little time in the office. Its great for photo taking but bad for posting to you guys!

I pulled into a lay-by while travelling to a small village yesterday and noticed these trees which looked really cool. I'm not a big fan of shooting into the sun however I think this one came out ok.

The weather down here is really cold at the moment and the snow we had the other day is lingering which is really unusual for the UK. I have managed to get some nice shots, if I get chance I will post some more later.

Today : Feb 10 - I have been a member of this community for 2 years now, sadly I have not posted as much as I would have liked, I have however enjoyed visiting the group 3-4 times a week and looking at all the wonderful pictures everyone posts, your all a great insperation.

While I'm still very busy with work, family and college (all seem to be full time!) I won't be able to post every day but I do hope to be able to share the times I am out and about.

As always, please leave feedback, good or bad as I am only a novice and very much appreciate all comments.
